On Halloween night, Kylie transformed—but it was more violent than the past. Maybe she had forgotten to properly time her transformation, or she had had too much caffeine during the day. Love, also, was another reason she could be feeling her body revolt like an ulcer in the pit of her stomach. She was in her living room when she fell down, her claws scraping away at the newspaper she had painstaking stacked the day before. She moaned and groaned, and prayed that new neighbors didn’t hear.

I was supposed to be in the woods, Kylie thought. I should have been away from here. Why am I changing so soon?

Kylie felt her spine and hips snap and shift inside her body until she was now a four-legged creature. The black hair on her head fell away and was replaced by thick, matted fur. Her hands and feet extended into paws as her belly dropped and became covered with fur. She could only claw at her apartment door as her thumbs became absorbed into her wolf form.

Come on, come on, she urged herself on, slowly holding her last shreds of human thought. I need to get out. I need to get outside into the woods so I can eat rabbits and squirrels. Not people. I can’t be seen. I can’t…

Just as the last change occurred, her door fell open. She bounded forward, all thoughts now lost in pure sensation and movements. When an old couple screamed at her, she bounced by them, using all of her energy to not smell the scent of meat. She ran down the stairwell and out into the lobby; Kylie knew she was caught. She had been seen. She could never come back to her apartment again and all of her toys and trinkets were now the state’s property, like her first house in Indiana. She would become an urban myth, a thing of legend that could never be caught. If she ran fast enough.

“Hey! Call the police! Animal control! A rabid dog is on the loose.”

A wolf, Kylie thought, still hearing her own human voice though it was now only a whisper in her head. I’m a wolf.

“What a vicious, ugly thing.”

I’m pretty, Kylie thought again. Jeanette said I’m pretty.

Sirens sounded at the other end of the apartment building. Before they could catch up, Kylie was running as fast as she could towards the ocean and the night.
